Court’s Bill to Extend Notification of the Senior Property Tax Exemption Passes Committee

(Jan. 30) – A bill to address and extend the short notification period for the senior homestead property tax exemption passed the House Finance Committee today on a vote of 12 to zero.

HB13-1145, sponsored by Rep. Lois Court (D-Denver), will extend the application deadline for the senior homestead property tax exemption from July 15 to Sept. 15. The concept was brought to Rep. Court by constituents whom felt they were not given enough notification of the exemption to apply.

“Because the exemption has frequently been suspended by the legislature, it’s possible not to know if it’s available until May, making the July deadline too narrow a window,” Rep. Court said. “This is about good government and will make the system easier to navigate for senior taxpayers.”

The bill will also allow assessors and treasurers of the same county to coordinate on mailed notices to reduce mailing costs and improve notification.
