State Representative Millie Hamner (D-Summit County)
Rep. Millie Hamner was appointed to fill the vacancy left by outgoing Rep. Christine Scanlan in House District 56 on Dec. 12, 2010. She hit the ground running in the 2011 legislative session, successfully sponsoring bills streamlining the license renewal process for teachers, speeding up the Department of Transportation’s timeline for recommending improvements on the traffic-plagued Interstate 70 Mountain Corridor, creating a biomass fuel program, and making new uses for forests killed by the current bark beetle infestation.
Before she was selected to represent the constituents of HD56, Rep. Hamner was superintendent of the Summit School District, where she protected the district’s 3,000 students from budget cuts that would have resulted in larger classes and fewer teachers.
Rep. Hamner began her career in Colorado public education as a teacher and administrator in the Eagle County School District in 1978. She taught and served the Eagle County School District for 23 years before being asked to become assistant superintendent of the Summit School District in the fall of 2001. She was promoted to superintendent in March 2004.
Rep. Hamner earned her PhD in Curriculum and Leadership from the University of Denver in 1996. As an adjunct professor for both Adams State College and the University of Denver, Rep. Hamner was involved with the planning and delivery of advanced degree programs for teachers and school administrators throughout Colorado. For her innovative approach to classroom teaching as well as her renowned ability to engage with students, she was named Adjunct of the Year in 2006 by the University of Denver.
Rep. Hamner is committed to public service and community involvement. In addition to serving on The Summit Foundation board of trustees, she is active in the Summit County Rotary Club.
