State Representative John Soper (D-Thornton)

Rep. John Soper is serving his fourth term as the state representative for House District 34, which includes parts of Northglenn, Thornton, Federal Heights and Westminster. He is ranking Democrat on the Economic and Business Development Committee and the Local Government Committee.


Rep. Soper is focused on workers’ rights and workplace safety. He has been a longtime champion of requiring contractors on state public works contracts worth more than $100,000 to pay prevailing wages and benefits to their workers.


In 1992, Rep. Soper was the Adams County Democrat of the Year for his extensive service to the community. He has served on numerous boards and committees including the Thornton Planning Commission, the County Parliamentarian for over 20 years, and House District 34 chair for over 20 years. He was appointed by Gov. Roy Romer to serve on the Pinnacol Assurance board of directors, where he served for six years. Rep. Soper has also served as chairman of the board for the Electrical Federal Credit Union for seven years.


Rep. Soper is a retired electrician and 22-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served as a hospital corpsman. He also taught for five years at Red Rocks Community College. Rep. Soper is a third-generation Colorado native and a product of the Denver Public Schools. He was born and raised in North Denver, moving to Adams County in 1967. He has been married for more than 50 years and has three children, nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
